Course Description

Lots of experiments and hands-on learning, creative projects, study forces in sport and transport, waves, Earth systems and objects in space - you can also take 1SCIB

  • Lots of practical investigations, modelling and hands-on learning
  • Creative application of science ideas in the form of posters, videos, reports etc
  • A variety of learning approaches to gain understanding

All Level 1 Science courses allow students to build the skills needed to access the science they are surrounded by daily in their own lives and in their local communities. Through a variety of hands-on learning, practical investigations, modelling, research and firsthand observations students will develop an understanding of the big ideas in Physics and Earth and Space Science. As much as possible students will be encouraged to select topics and options that inspire and engage them as the course progresses.

An idea of the type of content covered:

  • Investigate systems on Earth and how interactions with objects like the moon affect these systems
  • Examine deforestation's impact globally and in Aotearoa.
  • Waves: Different types including how UV waves can cause harm and how sunscreen offers protection against skin cancer
  • Investigate how forces affect the way that things move and apply to real-life scenarios such as waka, sports and everyday vehicles

NOTE: You are also welcome to take 1SCIB: Bio and Chem focus

A variety of skills and key concepts from all the branches of science will be covered. Each module will have some aspect of preparation for all L2 science courses and work to support co-requisites in literacy and numeracy.
