Mathematics

The NZ Curriculum states:

"Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time. Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data. These two disciplines are related but involve different ways of thinking and solving problems. Both equip ākonga with effective means for modelling, analysing, and interpreting the world in which they live.

Mathematicians and statisticians use symbols, graphs, displays, and diagrams to help them find and communicate patterns and relationships. They evaluate information to make informed decisions and create models to represent both real-life and hypothetical situations. These situations are drawn from a wide range of social, cultural, scientific, technological, environmental, and economic contexts."

In level 1 both courses will cover Mathematics and Statistics.  The Numeracy course will also support students who have yet to achieve US 32406 in achieving the Numeracy standard required for NCEA Level 1.   Mathematical strands in both courses will include number, algebra, measurement, statistics, geometry and space.

At level 2 students will have the choice of three mathematical courses - Calculus or Mathematics or Statistics.  Students may pick two mathematical courses, but the Mathematics and Statistics are predominantly the same course so cannot both be selected.  The Statistics course offers the external standard and is taught up to Excellence.

At level 2 we have the Step Ahead course which offers level 2 credits for a semester.  We also have a course for students who do not gain Numeracy in Year 11.  This is also a semester course.  This can be followed by the level 2 Step Ahead course in the second semester.

At level 3 students will have the choice of three mathematical courses - Calculus or Mathematics or Statistics.  Students may pick two mathematical courses, but the Mathematics and Statistics are predominantly the same course so cannot both be selected.  All courses are approved course for university entry.
